UT Permian Basin dropped both ends of a double header Saturday to conference opponent Eastern New Mexico in Odessa. The Greyhounds took the first game 3-2 and the second 5-0.
UTPB (12-24, 1-14) had chances in the first game. Both teams were scoreless heading into the fourth inning when Precious Aguirre singled to center field to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. They were able to plate another in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jennifer McElroy for the 2-0 lead. UTPB had a chance to answer in the bottom half of the inning. They had runners on second and third with one out but were unable to knock in a run.
UTPB was able to break through in the sixth. Maritza Rojas singled to center to drive in Lizzie Souza. With two out and two on, April Arellano hit an infield single to second base to tie the game at two. They would load the bases before the end of the inning but could not capitalize. With the game tied in the top of the seventh Erikka Burke hit a solo home run to left field to give ENMU the 3-2 lead. UTPB would go down in order in the bottom of the inning for the 3-2 final.
Eastern New Mexico (15-19, 8-10) started the second game fast with a big first inning. After a quick two outs, McElroy hit a two-run home run for the 2-0 lead. ENMU would load the bases before getting another run when Samantha Glover was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Aguirre would drive another run with a single for the 4-0 lead. Eastern would grab another run in the fourth on an RBI double by McElroy. UTPB's bats were quiet only managing four hits in the game off starter Kimberly Herron.
Arellano led the Falcons with two hits on the day. Cindy Juarez took the loss in the first game while Maritza Rojas took the loss in the second game for UTPB. Sloan Springfield pitched 6.1 innings in relief and allowed only one run while striking out four.
UTPB heads to Canyon for a three-game series against conference opponent West Texas A&M starting Thursday.
