Falcons Take Pair from Sul Ross

Aubree Avila and Maritza Rojas each had a pair of hits while Avila led the Falcons with a pair of RBI Tuesday afternoon as UT Permian Basin softball scored a pair of 2-1 and 4-1 victories over Sul Ross State at the UTPB Softball Field in Odessa.

Avila had the big hit in game one, lining a single into right field with a pair of runners on base to score Jessica Gonzalez and April Arellano to grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cindy Juarez gave up a lone run in the circle in the opener, a solo shot home run in the top of the second inning by Destanie Hernandez. She allowed four hits while walking none with one strike out in earning her first win of the season. Sloan Springfield recorded her first save of the season in recording the last two outs of the win.

The Falcons struck first in game two when Arellano scored from second on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Jessica Gonzalez.

After Sul Ross tied the game in the second, UTPB scored the final three runs of the game, taking the lead in the bottom of the third when Rojas, who pitched a complete game, helped her own cause by driving in Avila with a single into left field.

Lizzie Souza doubled the lead to a pair of runs when Alyssa Lopez stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing Souza to walk home for the run.

Arellano later doubled to drive home Lopez from third for the 4-1 lead.

Rojas improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing a single run on eight hits with no walks. She struck out a pair in the seven inning performance.

The Falcons continue their homestand this weekend, hosting Cameron in Lone Star Conference play. Friday action is set for first pitch at 4 p.m.
