UT Permian Basin opened conference play with a pair of losses in a doubleheader to Midwestern State in Odessa.
UTPB's bats were stifled in the first game dropping it 9-1. UTPB could only manage five base runners against starting pitcher Riley Adams. Alyssa Lopez scored the lone run for UTPB on a wild pitch in the sixth. Midwestern State was led by five home runs including two off the bat of Samantha Loos. UTPB starting pitcher Maritza Rojas struck out three in six innings.
Midwestern State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first in the second game. UTPB tied it up when Alexis Watson scored on a passed ball. A pair of singles plated two runs to give Midwestern the 3-1 lead. Maritza Rojas hit a solo home run to center field to grab a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Midwestern turned it on in the fifth with five runs on the strength of two home runs. They followed that up with a nine run seventh including back to back home runs. Rojas tripled in two in the bottom half of the inning to make the final score 18-5.
Rojas led all UTPB batters with the two hits and three RBI on the day. Watson and Jessica Gonzalez each had two hits apiece in the second game. Riley Adams got the win in the first game to improve to 3-0 while Abbie Lancaster picked up the win in the second game. Rojas suffered her first loss on the season and now has a 2-1 record and Sloan Springfield fell to a 1-3 record after taking the loss in the second game.
UTPB finishes the series with Midwestern State Sunday at noon before taking on Sul Ross State in a home doubleheader on Tuesday.
