Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Falcons Fall in Second Half to Western New Mexico

Despite leading at the half, UT Permian Basin women's basketball fell to Western New Mexico 61-41.

The Falcons (1-7, 0-2) jumped out to an early lead with a balanced offensive attack.  A Kristian James lay-up pushed the lead to five, before the Mustangs (3-3, 0-2) would cut the lead to one.  Teya Morris would knock down a three just before the buzzer to lead 16-12 after the opening frame.  Back to back baskets to open the second quarter, then an Alexandrea Washington three pushed the lead to nine.  The teams would trade points before a Sara Lopez three with 36 seconds remaining cut the Falcon lead to 27-24 heading into the half.

The Falcons would open the second half with a Washington three, but the Mustangs would go on a 9-0 to swing momentum.  Khali Pippins-Tryon would end the run with a three of her own but that was as close as the Falcons could get. The Mustangs would open the final frame on a 9-0 run and steal all the momentum.  The Falcon offense was unable to get going in the final frame, being outscored 37-14.

Washington finished as the leading scorer for the Falcons with 12 points.  Juliette Akinwole led the team on the boards with eight.

The Falcons look to bounce back next Friday when they take on Arlington Baptist at 2 p.m. in Odessa.
