High-Flying Falcons Too Much for Mustangs in LSC Opener

UT Permian Basin men's basketball used a balanced offensive attack in quickly getting a double-digit lead Saturday afternoon as the Falcons took down Western New Mexico 101-77 at the UTPB Gym in Odessa.

The Falcons (7-1, 1-0) shot 60 percent as a team on the night from the field (39-65) and hit 9-19 (47.4 percent) collectively as a unit as seven different players ended the night in double figures in scoring and all 10 Falcons scored at least five points in the game.

"We want our depth to be our strength," said head coach Josh Newman. "If we can continue to get quality contributions from everyone, we can have a great year. I was also proud to see our guys have no negative affects from our California trip and come out tonight showing a lot of toughness."

UTPB raced ahead to a 33-16 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the first half, out-scoring the Mustangs 11-2  and would never lead by fewer than 13 points.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jacob Ledoux and Isaac Hernandez and a basket in the paint from Amanze Njoku-Ibe pushed the Falcon lead out to 21 at 45-24.

Leading 49-31 at the half, UTPB led by as may as 23 points two different times on a 3-pointer by Adam Rivera and later in the half on a bucket from Xavier Ledet. A three point play in the final two minutes from Jamani Glover and a layup by Isaiah Hammons gave the Falcons their largest lead at 99-72 in the eventual 24-point win.

Ledoux led the Falcons again on offense, scoring 14 points with a game-high eight assists. Miles Washington and Glover each added 12 points, while Ledet, Hernandez, Rivera and Maurice Walton each scored 11 points in the game as UT Permian Basin won its 21st straight home game going back to the 2016-17 season.

"This was a big game for us," said Newman. "We talk about winning championships, and to do that you have to protect your home court. I was extremely proud of our guys for playing right off the bat with energy and effort."

Willie McCray led the Mustangs (3-3, 0-1) with 14 points off the bench as one of three Western New Mexico players in double figures in the game.

UT Permian Basin is back at home in over a week, facing Arlington Baptist Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The game will be the first-ever Toy Toss Game sponsored by Medical Center Health System. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed toy to throw on to the court after the Falcons score their first points of the night.
