UT Permian Basin men's basketball used a nine-point run over a minute and a half stretch in the second half to increase its lead to double digits in picking up an 88-79 victory over University of the Southwest at the Chap Center in Midland, Texas.
Jacob Ledoux fueled the rally, scoring each of the nine points in the stretch that took the Falcons leading 50-49 with 14:28 remaining in the game to 59-49 at 12:49 of the second half.
Ledoux followed it up with a three pointer on the team's next possession for his 12th straight UTPB point, and a layup by
Xavier Ledet pushed the UTPB advantage out to 64-51.
The Falcons (6-1) led by as many as 15 points two different times in the second half, the first as part of a six-point rally capped by a dunk from Ledet on the fast-break to go up 82-67, and the second when he hit the back end of a pair of free throws.
Ledoux ended the game leading the Falcons with 24 points, hitting 8-15 from the field . He tied for the team lead with three assists and had a team-best three steals on the night.
Ledet had one of his best games on the early season, hitting 7-8 from the field to score a season-high 16 points. The senior guard also nabbed a team-best seven rebounds in the victory.
Four more Falcons nearly hit double figures in scoring, as
Kyree Elder and
Jamani Glover each scored nine, and
Miles Washington and
Maurice Walton each tallied eight points as the Falcons shot 31-60 (51.7 percent) on the night as a team.Â
Rontrell HIlls led the Mustangs (1-6) with a game-high 27 points, hitting four 3-pointers for Southwest. The Mustangs rode the deep ball early on in the game, hitting three from beyond the arc to take an early 15-7 lead in the first four minutes.
UTPBÂ heads to the west coast Wednesday night, taking on University of the Pacific in an exhibition game before returning to Odessa to enter conference play. UTPB opens Lone Star Conference action next Saturday against Western New Mexico at 4 p.m.
