Falcon Madness

Falcons Tip-Off Season in Canyon

11/9/2018 1:10:00 PM

UT Permian Basin start their season tonight in Canyon when they take on Regis at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Colorado at Colorado Springs at 3:30 on Saturday.  The Falcons return just two rotation players from last season but head coach Rae Boothe maintains high expectations.

"The goals are always the same, and that's reach potential," said Boothe.  "I think our potential is very high right now, but locking in on the day-to-day in terms of having consistent practices, preparing well for teams early on is good with 12 new people."

While the roster has been reconstructed with 12 new players, six transfers and six freshman, Boothe says they are the right players for her system.

"I want to play fast and put a lot of pressure both on the basketball and on the rim. We have the players that have the athleticism to do that well, but we're still learning the system. How far we're able to go will be determined by our ability to execute. Right now it's really early in those stages but our goal is to be able to do a lot more by conference."

Only Khali Pippins-Tryon and Chynna Rivera return from last season's rotation, Juliette Akinwole redshirted the season, so Boothe and new assistant coach Sam Brenner have the task of making everyone fit.  Boothe says she likes what she sees so far but there are places for improvement.

"What we need to improve is our consistency and ability to stay focused for a long period of time. And be competitive throughout the course of every drill and practice every week that we get to spend together."

Despite the roster turnover, Boothe remains positive if the team continues to practice.

"Our expectations are very high, to reach potential and put the pieces together, that starts with practicing well every day."
