After splitting a pair of games last week to open the season, UT Permian Basin women's basketball heads to Lubbock for the Arbor Hotels Classic hosted by Lubbock Christian University. They'll start the weekend with a match-up with St. Mary's before taking on host school Lubbock Christian.
The Falcons opened the season with a 64-53 loss to Regis. The Falcons led into the third quarter before a 13-0 run by the Rangers gave them the lead. Late free throws pushed the game out of reach.
Khali Pippins-Tryon and
Lemia Ntor-Ue finished with 10 points apiece. Pippins-Tryon also added seven rebounds and three steals to lead the team while going 6-6 from the free throw line.
The next night the Falcons needed a late bucket to defeat Colorado at Colorado Springs. Scoring 45 combined points in the second and third quarters, the Falcons built a 12-point lead early in the fourth. The Mountain Lions would charge back and take a one-point lead with 1:19 remaining.
Sarah Bersang would drain a jumper with 13 seconds left to give the Falcons a 61-60 win and their first of the season. Bersang finished with game-highs with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists while adding three steals. Pippins-Tryon added 15 points and
Chynna Rivera hit four three-pointers to finish with 13 points.
The Falcons begin the weekend against St. Mary's who comes into the weekend with a 1-1 record as well. The Rattlers began their season in Stephenville against a pair of Lone Star Conference opponents. On Friday they opened their season with a 58-53 win over Texas Woman's. The Rattlers led by as many as nine in the third quarter, before Texas Woman's would take a five point lead with 2:57 to play. The Rattlers would close the game on a 10-0 run and sealed the game down the stretch with free throws.
The next night against host Tarleton State, the Rattlers fell behind 27-8 after a quarter. A 23-12 second quarter wasn't enough to overcome as the Rattlers would fall 79-69. They are led in scoring by Kaitlin Walla with 18 points per game while knocking down seven threes. Arysia Porter adds 15.5 ppg and eight rebounds per game. Hannah Wilson leads the team down low with 12.5 rpg while also averaging seven ppg.
On Saturday the Falcons take on No. 10 Lubbock Christian who started their season 2-0*. The Lady Chaps started slowly against MSU Denver, falling down 13 after the first quarter. The team would bounce back with a 24-8 second quarter and never looked back in their 73-53 win. The next night would be a closer against Colorado State – Pueblo. After the Lady Chaps led by eight after a quarter, Pueblo would battle to keep the game tight. A pair of late threes cut into the Lady Chaps lead but they held onto win 78-74. The Lady Chaps stayed perfect on the season in their 67-42 win over Texas A&M – Commerce on Monday. They took a 20-7 lead after a quarter and never looked back.
The Lady Chaps are led offensively by Maddi Chitsey with 14.7 ppg. Allie Schulte is right behind her with 14.3 ppg and a team-high 5.3 rpg. Olivia Roberton (12.3 ppg) and Bobbi Chitsey (10.3 ppg) also average double figures.
