Falcons Pick Up First Win in Final Seconds, 61-60

Sarah Bersang's basket with 13 seconds left lifted UT Permian Basin to their first win of the season over Colorado at Colorado Springs, 61-60 in Canyon, Texas.

The Mountain Lions (0-2) jumped out to an 8-2 lead right out of the gate.  The Falcons (1-1) answered with an 8-0 run capped by a three from Chynna Rivera to take the lead.  A 7-0 Mountain Lion run to close the quarter put the Falcons behind 15-10 after 10 minutes.  A Rivera three to open the second quarter followed by a Lemia Ntor-Ue lay-up and Bersang three, pushed the Falcons back into the lead.  Another pair of threes by Rivera and Bersang pushed the lead to four.  With two seconds left, Alexus Moore sank a free throw for a 32-27 lead at the half for the Falcons.

Khali Pippins-Tryon would hit a three early in the third quarter giving the Falcons an eight point lead.  For the next few minutes the teams traded baskets until a 9-2 Falcon run made it 49-37.  A late run by the Mountain Lions trimmed the lead to five, but a three-point play by Jada Berry made it 55-47 heading into the final quarter.  Back to back jumpers by Kristian James opened the fourth quarter giving the Falcons a 12 point lead with 7:06 to play.  The Falcon offense would go cold as the Mountain Lion offense would come back.  Jae Ferrin's lay-up with 1:19 put the Mountain Lions ahead 60-59.  After a pair of missed Mountain Lion free throws, the Falcons would have a chance for the win.  With 13 seconds left Bersang would knock down a jumper putting the Falcons up 61-60.  The ensuing Mountain Lion possession would come up short as the Falcons would hang on for their first win of the young season.

Bersang led the Falcons all over the floor on the day.  She led the team with a 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, all game-highs.  Pippins-Tryon finished the game with 15 points and four steals, while Rivera added 13 points off the bench.

The Falcons continue non-conference play next weekend when they head up to Lubbock to take on St. Mary's on Friday before a Saturday showdown with No. 10 Lubbock Christian.
