UT Permian Basin out-scored Cameron 50-38 in the second half and went 17-19 at the free throw line after halftime as the #8 Falcons picked up a 95-88 win over Cameron in its first Lone Star Conference game of 2018 in Odessa, Texas.
Down 50-45 at the half and trailing by seven when the Aggies scored the first basket in the second half, a 10-0 run with seven points by Josh Morris and a 3-pointer by James McPherson put the Falcons back in the lead 55-52.
Morris carried UTPB in the second half, hitting 6-8 from the field for 16 points in the final two minutes while battling early game foul trouble. Sammy Allen added a double-double in the second half alone with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons hit just two field goals in the final seven minutes of the game, both in the last minute of action on a layup by Allen with 56 seconds remaining for a seven-point, 89-82 lead, and McPherson on a breakaway pass by Daeshon Francis with six seconds remaining to seal the win putting the Falcons up six points.
Francis led four Falcons in double figures and three scoring at least 20 points with 24 on the night, hitting 7-12 from the field and 9-11 at the line. Morris, second in the nation in FG percentage entering the night, hit 8-10 from the field for a season-best 20 points. Allen grabbed 17 rebounds, a new season-high, to go with 15 points for his fourth double-double of the season to go with a team-best six assists on the night. McPherson hit four from 3-point range for 20 points, his fifth game this season with 20 points or more.
UTPBÂ shot over 50 percent on the night (50.8), including 50 percent or better in each half. They hit 26-31 at the line for a season-best 83.9 FT percentage.
Cameron held the Falcons to just 37 rebounds, tied for their second lowest total on the year, as the Aggies held a 39-37 rebound advantage. Tyler Williams and Johann Tate each had 15 points on the night to lead the Aggies.
