Frankie Rodriguez added goals in the final 45 minutes to carry UT Permian Basin men's soccer to a 3-0 win over Newman in its Heartland Conference season opener in Wichita, Kan.
Following a scoreless first half,
Stefan Faria scored his second of the season after a bad Newman pass on an assist by Lima 1:32 into the second half.
Lima doubled up the score almost seven minutes later, blasting in a deflected shot for his first goal of the season at 53:23 to give UTPB a 2-0 lead.
Rodriguez gave the Falcons insurance at 67:20, scoring on a breakaway for his second score of the early season for a 3-0 advantage.
Lucas Gomez stepped up big in goal for the Falcons, making five saves, four in the second half, in his second start of the season as Newman led the Falcons with 14 shots to 10.
UTPB remains on the road in conference play this weekend, traveling to Claremore, Okla., for a Saturday afternoon league contest at Rogers State.
