#17 UT Permian Basin men's basketball's magical season came to an end Saturday night as the Falcons fell victim to a last-second buzzer-beating 30 foot 3-pointer as time expired in a 74-71 loss to Texas A&M Kingsville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament South Central Region in Golden, Colorado.
UTPB led early on in the game 12-4, but a hot-shooting Javelinas team hit 9-18 from 3-point range in the first half to lead 43-34.
Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, UTPB fought back behind 10 points from
Daeshon Francis and nine from
Johnnie Lacy.
The Falcons took their first lead in the second half on a dunk by
Josh Morris and he hit a free throw on the next possession for a 70-68 lead. A 3-point play by Duan Wright on the next Kingsville possession gave TAMUK a 71-70 lead, but
Sammy Allen tied the game at 71-71 at the line with 56 seconds left.
UTPB had a chance to score with under 10 seconds remaining but had a layup blocked and recovered by Kingsville, and Marcus Frazier took the inbounds pass and hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from 30 feet off the backboard for the win.
Francis led the Falcons with 16 points and Lacy hit 13-13 from the free throw line to add 15 points and four assists.
Zeldric King scored 13 points off the bench for UTPB.
2016-17 was a season of firsts for UT Permian Basin men's basketball. The Falcons finished the season 26-6 on the year and were Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament champions in their first season of competition in the league. UTPB had four players selected all-conference, including
Daeshon Francis being named the LSC Player of the Year and
Andy Newman being selected the 2017 LSC Coach of the Year.
