Six different pitchers combined to limit University of the Southwest to one hit and four walks Friday afternoon as the UT Permian Basin baseball team opened its 2017 season with a 9-1 win over the Mustangs at Roden Field in Odessa.
Chris Cano picked up the win for the Falcons, striking out nine in five no-hit, shutout innings.
The Falcons picked up 13 of 27 outs on the day by ringing up Southwest hitters.
Doug Clapperton and
Jordan Zazulak each had three hits on the day, Clapperton scoring and driving in once each out of the leadoff spot for UTPB and Zazulak driving in a pair.
Tyler Houlihan,
Alex Fernandez and
Jackson Pritchard each also recorded multiple hits on the day, with Pritchard and
William Bierlein each scoring twice on the afternoon.
UTPB and Southwest meet again Saturday afternoon, with the teams playing a nine-inning game in Hobbs, N.M.
