UT Permian Basin opened its first ever Lone Star Conference season Friday afternoon, suffering a pair of 3-1 and 5-3 defeats to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The Mustangs scored three times in the first inning, including a pair on a two-run home run by pitcher Erin Knox helping her own cause.
UTPBÂ grabbed its run in the top of the seventh, scoring when
Daisy Aguilar grounded out to second to score
Lizzie Souza from third.
Chelsae Faries settled down after the first inning, throwing five scoreless innings over the remainder of the game. She gave up three earned runs off of four hits and two walks while striking out four on the afternoon.
Knox limited the UTPB offense to a pair of hits and a walk over seven one-run innings.
The Falcons came out fast in game two, scoring three times in the top of the first. Aguilar drove in her second and third runs of the day on a two-run homer to center for a fast 2-0 lead.
Alexis Watson added to the advantage with a single up the middle with a pair on base to drive in Faries.
Midwestern State grabbed one back in the first on a lead off homer by Lauren Lindgren, and then the Mustangs used a pair of two-run innings later in the game to tie the game in the third inning and grab the two-run lead in the sixth.
The Falcons pounded out 13 hits in game two as
Sloan Springfield went 3-4 at the plate with
Melissa Zuniga, Faries, Watson and
Samantha Rodriguez each ending the night with a pair of hits.
The two teams close out the weekend three-game set Saturday afternoon.
