UT Permian Basin freshman diver Garrett Martin qualified for the NCAA Nationals not just as a freshman, but in his first ever appearance with the Falcons, and UTPB picked up a pair of wins Friday night while swimming against Division I Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
"We're very excited about our first national qualifier in diving, and I'm proud of both the work Coach Jennifer and Garret have done on the boards," said UTPBÂ head swim coach
Cameron Kainer. "I think its a great first step for the new identity of our team but we still have plenty of work to continue."
Martin scored 286.35 in the 1m, good to surpass the minimum score needed to automatically advance to Nationals.
'Qualifying as a freshman is an outstanding accomplishment, and it's wonderful for him to do it in his first ever meet," said UTPB diving coach
Jennifer Mangum. "We look forward to matching or bettering our results as the season progresses. I am very proud of Garrett for being tough today and not letting one mistake ruin the rest of the day."
The Falcons picked up a pair of wins in swimming events on the afternoon. Bailey Benson won the women's 1,000Â Freestyle, taking first place with a time of 11:34.97. Jakub Murici won the men's 100 Breaststroke with a winning time of 1:00.15.
The Falcons stay in the San Antonio area Saturday, competing against Division III Trinity at 11 a.m.
