Sierra LaGrande scored a season-high 24 points and UT Permian Basin women's basketball weathered a late push by Texas A&M International to grab its first win of the season, a 70-64 victory over the Dustdevils in their home opener Monday night in Odessa.
LaGrande played a big part in stretching a two-point 32-30 halftime lead out to a 57-44 advantage after 30 minutes, scoring 14 points right after the half with three 3-pointers in that stretch.
Texas A&M International scored fast to start the fourth quarter, scoring the first eight points in the opening 1:32 to close the lead down to just five points.
The Dustdevils got within three points in the quarter and were down 68-64 on a 3-pointer by Ashley Perez, but Jackie Perez hit a pair of free throws in the last 38 seconds to score the final points of the game in the six-point win.
LaGrande ended the evening shooting 9-18 from the field, hitting a team-high four 3-pointers to go with three assists.Â
Khali Pippins-Tyron added 13 points on 6-12 shooting, and Perez added 11 points with two 3-pointers.Â
Victoria Lopez grabbed seven rebounds to lead UTPBÂ to go with seven points on the night.Â
The Falcons forced 25 turnovers on the night as six players recorded at least two steals for the game.
UTPBÂ opens Lone Star Conference play Thursday night, traveling to Portales, N.M., for a Thursday night game at 2016-17 LSC Regular Season Champion Eastern New Mexico.
