Stefan Faria broke a 1-1 tie and pushed UT Permian Basin to its second straight win of the week as UTPB defeated St.Mary's 2-1 in overtime Thursday night at the UTPB Turf Field in Odessa.
The Falcons were awarded a free kick at the top of the box after the St. Mary's goalkeeper handled the ball outside of the 16-yard box. Faria curved the ball around the wall on a hard blast for his third goal of the season.
Paul Balderrama earlier tied the game up in the 79th minute, scoring his first of the year on a 45 yard shot attempt that bounced off the field turf and over the goalkeeper's head and under the cross bar at 78:26.
Pato Faz took a breakaway early in the first half for the Rattlers and fired to the back right corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season for the 1-0 lead at 6:05 in the first half.
The Falcons were out-shot 18-11 on the night, but put the pressure on in the second half after recording just one shot in the first 45 minutes. Faria and
Jorge Murillo each had shot attempts miss by inches early in the second half before the game-tying goal.
Alex Sproule improved to 4-3 in the net on the season for the Falcons, making eight saves on nine attempts.
UTPB is back at home this weekend in Heartland Conference play, hosting Texas A&M International at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
