Swimming in their final regular season duals of the season before next month's conference championships, UT Permian Basin men's and women's swimming each picked up a pair of victories Saturday afternoon against Southwestern and Wayland Baptist at the COM Aquatics Center in Midland.
"I was happy we were able to get two victories for our seniors on Senior Day," head coach
Cameron Kainer said. "They have helped change our program in a positive way and I'm glad we had a team victory on both sides to finish out our regular season. We are very excited to get ready for conference and move towards that part of our season. The team has been working really hard this year to achieve their goals and with the attitude and culture they've set, we plan on turning some heads within our conference."
Four individuals picked up wins for the UTPB women.
Amanda Alspaugh won a trio of events, winningh the 200 butterfly (2:11.72), 100 butterfly (59.12) and 400 IM (4.47.65).
Bailey Benson won twice on Saturday, finishing the 1,650 freestyle in 19:03.41 and the 500 free in 5:35.17.
Jennifer Sites added a victory in the 200 backstroke in 2:21.12, and
Anouk van Nellestijn won the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.73.
The Falcon women had five second-place finishes on the day.
Hunter Bishop was second twice, in the 200 freestyle (1:59.85) and 100 freestyle (56.28). Sites was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:04.64), with
Sarah Waldren second in the 50 free (26.17) and
Juliana Dias finishing the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.62.
Patrick Flores led a group of UTPB men with first-place finishes, taking first in both the 100 and 200 butterfly in 53.27 and 1:59.09. Matthew Hayward also picked up a pair of wins, finishing the 1,650 freestyle in 17:32.50 and the 500 freestyle first with a time of 4:57.80. Gustavo Damis was 1st in 54.76 in the 100 backstroke,
Nolan Hines swam the 50 freestyle in 22.24, and
Nathan Pantalion won the 400 IM in 4:21.19.
The Falcon men had a number of runner-up finishes, including a pair from
Errol Lizzotte in the 50 freestyle (22.53) and 100 butterfly (53.54).
Wyatt Matschner was second in the 1,650 freestyle (18.22.01), Hayward runner-up in the 200 freestyle (1:48.15), Hines second in 56.66 in the 100 backstroke,
Jacob Allard swam the 200 backstroke in 1:58.86, Pantalion second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.76, and
Steffen Buttner placed second in the 500 freestyle in 4:59.12.
Both teams will compete next in next month's NSISC Championships to close out the season, hosted by Delta State in Cleveland, Mississippi
