UT Permian Basin volleyball fell behind 2-1 after three sets for its second straight trip on the court, but the Falcons fought back once again to take the fourth and fifth sets in a 26-24, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-13 win against Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas.
Travanna Matthews played a part in six blocks on the night as UTPB had seven total blocks to three by Wayland Baptist.
Trailing after three sets including a third set lost by seven points, UTPB took advantage by scoring seven of eight points, six on errors by Wayland Baptist, to push a 7-6 lead out to 14-7.
UTPB withstood a seven of eight run by the Pioneers that left the Falcons ahead just 19-17, and after Wayland closed the gap to 22-21, kills by
Caitlyn Guajardo and
Puava Tulau sandwiched around a block by Matthews and Tulau won the set at 25-21.
The Falcons came back again in the decisive fifth set. After trailing 6-3, kills by
Mallory Nicholson and
Mykayla Williams followed by a WBU mistake gave the Falcons a 9-7 lead.
Teams traded points over the remainder of the set with UTPB scoring its final five of the match on kills and locking up the win on an attack by Matthews.
Guajardo led the Falcons with 16 kills as
Rachel Dixon tallied double digit attack winners with 10. Nicholson led all players on the night wil 30 assists, and
Sarah Vasquez had a team-best 30 digs.
UTPB is back in tournament action this weekend with four matches at the Tarleton Invitational.
