UT Permian Basin scored the first touchdown of the day and held a first quarter 7-6 lead, but West Texas A&M scored 45 consecutive points in leaving Ratliff Stadium Sunday afternoon with a 48-14 win over the Falcons in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
Trailing 3-0 halfway through the first quarter,
Christian Weaver picked up a fumble by Devon Paye at the Buffaloes 32 yard line and took it in for the score, the team's second fumble return for a TD in two straight weeks.
West Texas A&M scored on its next series, an 18-yard touchdown pass, and found the end zone six times over the remainder of the game while adding a 38-yard field goal.
Caden Coots connected with
Terrell Davidson in the back corner of the end zone with 52 seconds remaining in regulation for a nine-yard score, capping a 15 play, 75 yard drive.
UTPB had 117 yards on the ground on 39 attempts to 107 rushing yards by West Texas A&M on 30 carries, but the Buffaloes controled the air, throwing for 361 yards while holding UTPB to just 145 passing yards.
Brandon Infiesto led UTPB with 66 yards on 12 carries, averaging 5.0 yards a carry.
Marquis Simmons added 37 yards on just seven attempts at 5.3 yards a run.
Kristian Brown led the receiving corps with 58 yards on six receptions.
The Falcons close out a four-game homestand next weekend, hosting Western New Mexico Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
