Falcons End 2016 with 12-9 Loss at #17 Lubbock Christian

Box Score Senior Bryan Van Vranken hit two of UTPB's three home runs Saturday in his final game as a Falcon, but a big sixth inning helped carry Lubbock Christian to a 12-9 win as UT Permian Basin closed out its 2016 season at Hays Field in Lubbock.

Ryan Souza tied a low-scoring contest at 1-1 in the top of the fifth with a single into center to score Doug Clapperton.

A two-run homer for Lubbock Christian gave the Chaps back the lead exiting the bottom of the fifth at 3-1.

Van Vranken's two-run jack in the top of the sixth tied the game at 3-3, and Clapperton hit a sac fly to score Alex Fernandez for a 4-3 lead.

Lubbock Christian scored half of its runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting a six-run inning to go back ahead 9-4.

Van Vranken left the yard again in the top of the eighth. Souza later reached on a fielder's choice as Fernandez scored on an error on the play. Jack Miller then drove in a pair of unearned runs on a single into left to pull within one and trail 9-8.

The deficit was extended to four in the bottom of the eighth after a 3-run homer put the Chaps ahead by four.

Fernandez gave UTPB the team's third homer of the game, hitting it over the left center fence.

Kevin Barnes led the Falcons with three of the team's 15 hits on the afternoon as six other Falcons had a pair of base hits on the day.
