3/12/2016 9:50:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UT-Permian Basin Baseball regrouped after dropping its first Heartland Conference game of the season 8-5 by defeating Texas A&M International 11-5 at Uni-trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas.

Trailing 1-0 in the nightcap, the Falcons put five runs together in the top of the fifth. Mike Fernandez came in on an error after leading off the inning with a triple to the gap in right center. An error with the bases loaded later allowed Chase Dillon and Morgan Munguia to score, and a Jack Miller two-run single scored Latrell Harris and Kevin Barnes for a 5-1 lead.

A Munguia sacrifice bunt with one out in the top of the sixth brought in Dillon to score from third for a 6-1 UTPB advantage.

The Dustdevils scored four straight runs, including three in the seventh to pull within a run, but the UTPB offense came back to score the last five runs of the night. Munguia singled to drive in Bryan Van Vranken in the top of the eighth for a 7-5 lead.

A pair of errors led to three runs in the top of the ninth, and Munguia later added his third RBI of the night with a triple to drive in Tyler Houlihan.

Donald Wanner improved to 2-1 on the season on the bump for UTPB, allowing four earned runs off of four hits and six walks while striking out one.

Miller led the Falcons with three hits and Barnes and Munguia each had a pair of hits in game two.

UTPB led 2-1 in the top of the fourth in the opener when Van Vranken homered and Alex Fernandez scored on a single by Jackson Pritchard, but the lead was short-lived as Texas A&M International came back with six runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Alex Fernandez brought UTPB back within two runs as his 3-run home run in the top of the fifth closed the gap to 7-5, but the Dustdevils scored the last run of the game on a fielder's choice error in the bottom of the fifth.

The two teams close out the weekend Sunday afternoon in Laredo.
