UT Permian Basin scored the last four points in regulation in the final four minutes Saturday afternoon to send its Lone Star Conference contest against Texas Woman's into overtime, but the Pioneers outlasted the Falcons in an 84-80 defeat in Denton, Texas.
The Falcons, who trailed by as many as seven points in the third quarter, came back on a 10-1 run capped with 3-pointers by
Nakedra Burke and
Briana Caro for a 45-43 lead with 2:11 to play in the third.
The Falcons led once in the fourth quarter on a
Heather Crittenden layup with 3:15 remaining in regulation.
Trailing by four in the final minute, UTPB tied the game on baskets by
Victoria Lopez and
Niva Taito, the final one coming with a few seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
The Pioneers scored the first seven points of overtime to take a commanding 77-70 lead. UTPB pulled within a possession two different times on 3-pointers by
Jau'nae Peevy and Taito, but TWU hit a pair at the line with nine seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Taito led the Falcons with a season-high 21 points on the night. Caro added 17 points and seven rebounds with four assists off the bench, and Crittenden shot 6-8 from the field to add 13 points.
