Falcons Pull Out 94-88 Overtime Thriller

UT Permian Basin men's basketball turned around a 60-40 deficit with 14 minutes to play to force overtime, and the Falcons prevailed to take a 94-88 win over Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon in Kingsville, Texas.

UTPB fell behind 9-0 in the early minutes of the game and trailed for the entirety of the first half. The Tigers built on their lead to start the second and led 60-40 with 14:06 in regulation remaining.

The Falcons made a game of it by scoring 13 straight points in just over two minutes to trail by three points. Jason McPherson hit a 3-pointer and Renard Thomas scored a layup off a steal by Zeldric King to trail 63-52. Thomas hit the back end of a pair at the line the next time on offense to trail by 10, and UTPB but the lead to single digits on a four-point play by McPherson to pull within six. King hit a free throw and then connected on a layup to close the gap to 63-60.

UTPB took its first lead of the night with 55 seconds remaining in regulation when McPherson hit another 3-pointer for an 82-81 lead, and he added a free throw on the next possession for the 83-81 lead.

The Tigers hit a pair at the line with seven seconds left to tie the score at 83-83, and a 3-pointer as the clock expired by Johnnie Lacy was off the mark to send the game to overtime.

UTPB never trailed in overtime, scoring the first four points on two at the free throw line by Daeshon Francis and a layup on an offensive rebound by Andrew Poulter.

The Falcons locked up the win by scoring the last five points of the night at the line as Ouachita Baptist missed all nine of its field goal attempts in overtime.

McPherson led UTPB with 22 points on the night, hitting six 3-pointers. Lacy scored 21 in the game with five shots from long range and four assists. Francis added 20 points and 15 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Sammy Allen led all players in the game on the glass, helping UTPB to a 52-44 rebounding advantage with a game-high 17 rebounds.

UTPB is back home this coming week, hosting Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico in the start of Lone Star Conference play.
