Baseball Keeps Streak Alive with Pair of Two-Run Wins at Rogers State

UTPB baseball pushed its win streak out to five straight games Friday afternoon, defeating Rogers State 8-6 and 3-1 at Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Okla.

The Falcons broke out the bats early in the opener, scoring one in the top of the first with five more to come in the second.

David Lee scored in the opening inning, hitting a two-out double into right and scoring on a Bryan Van Vranken single into left.

UTPB broke the game open in the top of the second, taking advantage of a pair of Hillcat errors in the inning to go with five hits to take a 6-0 lead. The Falcons got a run-scoring hit from Matt Reyes with the bases loaded to drive in Nolan Schattel as the first four batters reached base. David Fetkenher later scored on a wild pitch and Reyes came in on a single back up the middle from Lee. Two more scored on a fielding error at third to put the Falcons on top 6-0.

Rogers State got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but UTPB responded with two more in the bottom of the sixth. Lee reached on a fielder's choice as Reyes scored on the play, and Lee crossed home on a Van Vranken double to right center.

Rogers State came up with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, including three on a bases-loaded triple, but left the tying run at the plate on a fly out into right.

Lance Fairchild went six on the bump for UTPB, giving up a lone unearned run off of four hits and four walks while ringing up four to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Falcons had four players with multiple hits, led by Lee and Van Vranken with 3-4 nights at the plate. Lee scored three rimes with two RBI while Van Vranken drove in two and scored once.

UTPB scored early again in game two, taking a 1-0 lead when Lee doubled into left center to score Reyes for a 1-0 lead.

The one run game held until the top of the eighth when Daniel Andrade hit a triple into left center with two on, scoring Lee and Kevin Barnes to increase the advantage to 3-0.

Rogers State came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but got no closer in the 3-1 UTPB win.

Brad Paramapoonya shut the Hillcats down on the afternoon, giving up four hits and three walks in throwing 6.2 shutout innings. He struck out eight in improving to 6-1 on the season.

Nolan Schattel gave up a lone walk in throwing a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the season.

The Falcons go for their second straight conference sweep Saturday when the two teams play the third and final game of the weekend at 1 p.m.
