Softball Starts Weekend with Pair of Losses at Newman

UTPB softball nearly pulled off a comeback in the opening game of a three game set at Newman Friday night before the Jets scored a 5-4 walkoff win in the seventh in Wichita, Kan. Newman later took the second game of the day 7-1.

The Falcons grabbed the first lead of the day in the fourth when Miley McKeen drove in Irene Valdez with a base hit.

Newman responded with three home runs, two in the fourth inning and a third in the fifth for a 4-1 advantage.

UTPB came back in the sixth to but the lead to 4-2 when Valdez scored from third as McKee was thrown out stealing second.

The Falcons made their last trip to the plate count, scoring twice when Niki DiSera homered to left field before UTPB tied the game when McKee reached on an error with the bases as Nikki Salazar came home to tie the game 4-4.

Kelsey Jones ended the game for Newman in the seventh, hitting a bases-loaded two out single into left field for the 5-4 walk off win.

Valdez led the Falcons with with three hits and scored twice in the game batting leadoff.

Adriannna Berzoza again put the Falcons in the lead first in game two, hitting her third home run of the season to center field in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.

Newman controlled the rest of the game, scoring five times in the bottom of the second before adding a run in each of the third and fourth innings in the six-run win.

IThe teams are back at the NU Softball Field Saturday, closing out the series at 11 a.m
