Baseball Breaks Out Bats in 9-4 Win Sunday Afternoon at Southwest

UTPB baseball combined for nine runs off of 15 hits Sunday afternoon to pick up a 9-4 victory and improve to 3-0 on the season at University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M.

UTPB scored in its first trip to the plate, taking a 1-0 lead when Jack Miller singled to center to drive in David Lee.

The Falcons added two more in the top of the second when Ty Morgan scored on a Randal Toribio double and later scored on a throwing error by the right fielder.

Southwest tied the game in its half of the fourth, scoring its first run on a single from Anthony Boyle and evened the score at 3-3 on a two-run base hit by Robert Montoya.

The Falcons came back with a five-run fifth inning, scoring a pair when Morgan tripled to right to clear the bases and drive in Alfred Itturalde and Morgan Munguia. He scored on Toribio's second RBI base hit of the game. Kowal later tirpled hit home, and he scored the fifth run of the inning on a base hit from Daniel Andrade.

UTPB answered a Southwest run in the sixth with one of its own in the seventh when Kowal hit his second double, plating Munguia for his second run of the game.

Brad Paramapoonya went five innings on the hill for UTPB, giving up three runs in earning the win. He gave up four hits and walked none while stirking out five. Nolan Schattel gave up an unearned run off of a hit and walk with a pair of k's in two innings of relief.

Toribio led the offense with a 3-4 day at the plate and a pair of runs and RBIs as one of five players with multiple hits in the UTPB order.

The Falcons and Mustangs were tied 3-3 in the top of the 8th inning when game two was suspended due to playing conditions. That game will be resumed before next Saturday's scheduled doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Hobbs.
