UTPB Softball hit three home runs and broke out the bats early in opening up the Mansfield North Texas Softball Bash with a 9-1 victory over Cameron Thursday afternoon in Mansfield, Texas. The Falcons fell 10-0 later in the day to Midwestern State.
UTPB came out with five runs in the top of the first in the opener against Cameron.
JJ Von Oesen drove in the first of the day on a single to score
Irene Valdez. A batter later,
Chelsae Faries went deep with a pair on base for her first home run of the season to put the Falcons on top 4-0.
Dee Gaona followed later with her first round-tripper of the season for a 5-0 lead.
Ashlynn Williams added to the advantage in the top of the second, getting a base hit to drive in
Niki DiSera from second. Williams later scored on a bases-loaded walk by
Adrianna Berzoza to increase the lead out to 7-0.
Cameron grabbed an unearned run on an infield ground out to trail 7-1 through the first two innings.
Von Oesen used the team's third homer of the day, a two-run blast to score Williams on her team-leading fourth of the season for a 9-1 advantage.
Holly Herrington picked up her first win of the season in the circle for UTPB. She gave up four hits and a walk in the five inning win, allowing an unearned run with three strikeouts.
Williams went 3-3 at the plate with three runs and an RBI while Von Oesen and Faries each drove in three runs.
The Falcons were shut down in game two against Midwestern State as
Mallory Hall had the team's only hit against Mustangs starting pitcher Katlyn Holmes in the 10-0 loss.
UTPB is back in action in Mansfield at noon and 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, taking on Bethany and Oklahoma City.
