Softball Splits Final Day of Desert Stinger

UTPB softball split in its final day of action at the 2015 Desert Stinger Sunday afternoon, rallying to defeat Western Oregon 5-4 before falling 10-0 against MSU-Billings at Majestic Park in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Falcons came from behind in the bottom of the third when trailing 1-0 as Western Oregon scored in the top of the first to lead off the game. JJ Von Oesen came through with two runners on base with her third home run of the season to clear the bases and put UTPB on top 3-1.

Ashlynn Williams added to the lead in the fourth, grounding out to first to score Miley McKee from third to go on top 4-1.

Western Oregon came back with its own home run in the fifth inning, a two-run blast to pull within a run. The Wolves tied the game on their second homer of the day, a solo shot with one out in the top of the sixth.

Western Oregon had a chance to go ahead in the seventh, but stranded the leadoff batter after she reached second with no outs.

Von Oesen scored the game-winning run for UTPB, coming home with one out and the bases loaded on a wild pitch to end the game.

She ended the day 1-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and 3 RBI. Mallory Hall was a perfect 3-3 batting out of the two-hole for UPTB.

Kim Alonzo picked up her first win of the season for the Falcons in the circle. She was charged with a four runs, two earned, on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Falcons struggled in the final game of the weekend against tournament host Montana State Billings. The Yellowjackets scored in four out of five innings and went ahead 5-0 through two innings.

Hall led the Falcons on offense again, going 2-3 from the plate in the five inning game.

UTPB is back in Texas next weekend, playing five games in Mansfield Thursday through Saturday.
