UT-Permian Basin Men's Basketball scored 21 consecutive points and held a 30 point halftime lead as the Falcons opened its 2015-16 Hearland Conference schedule with a 106-97 victory over Newman.
The Falcons held Newman scoreless for just over six minutes and went from leading 5-4 to a commanding 26-4 advantage.
UTPB further increased its lead by scoring 12 straight points in the final moments of the first half, six coming from a pair of 3-pointers by
Johnnie Lacy, and the Falcons went into halftime leading 55-25.
Lacy led the Falcons with 18 points in the first half, hitting 4-6 from 3-point range.
Gary Akbar added 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half, while
Anthony Knight scored nine.
Taylor Schieber gave the Jets life in the second half. Newman's second-leading scorer on the day scored all of his 23 points after halftime and hit 7-13 attempts from 3-point range.
Newman got within eight points four different times in the final two minutes, but the Falcons responded each time.
Lacy led all players on the day with 27 points, shooting 7-12 from the field with four 3-pointers and a perfect 9-9 day at the free throw line. Akbar double-doubled with 21 poinst and 13 rebounds.
Codye Hatcher hit 8-9 from the floor for 16 points.
Malcolm Hill-Bey added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, while
Tramique Sutherland contributed 14 points and seven rebounds and Knight ended the game with 13 points as all six Falcons to score ended the game in double figures.
The Falcons shot around 55 percent in each half, ending the game 38-69 (55.1 percent) from the field.
UTPB is back in action in two weeks, traveling to Claremore, Okla., for a New Years Eve contest at Rogers State at 7:30 p.m.
