9/11/2014 9:04:00 PM

Box Score UTPB volleyball improved to 2-1 in the Heartland Conference Thursday night with a four set, 25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21 home victory over Newman.

The Falcons controlled the pace to start off the first set, taking a 3-0 lead behind the serve of Ariana Gallardo. Holding a slight 15-14 lead later in the set, the Falcons scored six straight points with a pair of kills from Morgann Davis to lead by eight. A Hannah Rebb kill and an attack error by Newman five points later wrapped up a set one, seven-point victory.

UTPB won the second set in much different fashion, needing to rally late to come-from-behind. Trailing 20-15 to the Jets, the Falcons rattled off nine straight points on a pair of kills and two blocks to go on top 24-20 before winning the second set 25-21 two points later on a Bobbi Sczruba winner.

Having dropped the third set, UTPB came back midway through the fourth to rebound from trailing 13-10 to take a 16-13 lead. Newman came back to even the fourth at 19-19, but the Falcons brought the contest to match point with five straight points. Following a pair of Newman points, Rachel Dixon ended the game with a kill to wrap up the four-set victory.

Morgann Davis led the Falcons with 11 kills on the evening while Ashley Gonzalez led all players in the match with 16. Anna Burton led all players with 33 digs for the Jets while Taylor Harmon had a team-high 30 for UTPB.

The Falcons continue Heartland Conference action this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
