UTPB Baseball locked up a split on the day with 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings of game two Sunday afternoon, earning a 12-2 defeat of Newman to close out the doubleheader after the Jets blanked the Falcons 4-0 in the opener.
Already leading 2-1 in game two,
Trey Cochran led off the top of the fifth with his team-leading fourth home run of the season to left field.
The Falcons got run-scorring base hits in the inning from
David Fetkenher,
Ryne Head,
Ryan Popescu,
Andrew Grifol, and Cochran was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the sixth and final run of the inning to give UTPB an 8-1 advantage.
Popescu drove in his second of the day with a single up the middle in the UTPB half of the sixth, and Cochran later drove in three runs, doubling with the bases loaded to clear the bases and tally six RBI in the game for a 12-1 lead.
Brian Woody earned his first win of the season for the Falcons, giving up two runs off six hits and four walks while striking out five in throwing all seven innings.
Earlier in the day, the Falcons were held to just four hits and a walk as John Branum kept the Falcons scoreless in a 4-0 shutout for the Jets.
Cochran had two of the team's four hits in game one and finished the day 5-of-7 with 6 RBI and a run scored. Popescu scored three times and drove in a pair in game two, finishing the game 4-of-5 at the top of the UTPB lineup.
The Falcons look to win the series Monday afternoon, returning to McCarthy Field at 2 p.m. in the final game of the weekend.
