Fairchild, Madsen Carry Falcons to Sweep Over OPSU

3/29/2014 4:18:00 PM

Lance Fairchild threw his first complete game of the season and Neil Madsen blasted his first home run of the year as UTPB baseball completed the three game sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State with a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa.

Colin Kowal and Ryne Head got the UTPB offense going in the bottom of the third as each reached base to lead off the inning with infield bunts. Kowal came in to score two batters later on a single to center by Andrew Grifol to go on top 1-0.

OPSU came back right away in its next trip to the plate when Evan Offutt singled to right to drive home Christopher McClendon from second and tie the game at 1-1.

Madsen came up big for the Falcons in the bottom of the sixth, homering to right with two outs to grab back the one run advantage.

Fairchild fought through trouble in the top of the ninth as the Aggies tallied three hits in their last chance to bat. McClendon was picked off of first by catcher Ryan Arrick after leading off the inning with a base hit, and Fairchild got a strikeout and knocked down a comebacker up the middle to record the final two outs with the go-ahead run on first base to wrap up the victory.

Madsen led UTPB with two hits on the day and finished the weekend with a team-best six hits to hit .750.

The Falcons hit the road next weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a three-game set at St. Mary's.
