UTPB Baseball scored a combined eight runs in the first two innings of game two to pick up a 10-2 victory over Univeristy of the Southwest Tuesday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa. Univerity of the Southwest came from behind to take the opener 3-1.
The Falcons got off to a quick start in game two, getting three in the bottom of the first off of three hitsand a pair of walks.
Andrew Grifol and
Trey Cochran hit back-to-back run-scoing doubles and
David Fetkenher flew out to right to score Cochran to go on top 3-0.
UTPB added five more runs in its next trip to the dish as
Ryne Head and Fetkenher each drove in a pair with base hits and a
Travis Sims triple to right scored Fetkenher to climb out to an 8-0 advantage.
Head and Fetkenher each drove in another run in the team's last trip to the plate for a 10-2 lead through six.
Hector Arellano earned the win for UTPB, giving up a run off three hits in four innings. He improved to 2-2 on the season as he struck out a pair and walked none.
Fetkenher drove in four runs on a pair of hits in game two while Head went 3-4 with three RBI.
UTPB went on top first in the opener, taking an early lead when
Blake Goodwyn singled to left to score Head from second after he had reached base on an error to lead off the frame.
The Mustangs went ahead in the fourth, scoring three unearned runs off of UTPB starter
Ethan Blucher on three hits and an error to lead off the inning.
Neither team mounted much of an offensive threat after Southwest went on top halfway through the first game as the two sides combined for just three hits over the next 3.5 innings with no batters reaching base past the fifth inning.
The Falcons are back in Heartland Conference action this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State for a Friday doubleheader and lone game on Saturday. First pitch both days is set for 1 p.m.
