UTPB Baseball scored twice in the top of the ninth, but the two runs weren't enough to overcome a five run seventh by Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 6-4 loss Saturday afternoon at Crowder Field in Fort Smith, Ark.
The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a pair of errors when
Andrew Grifol advanced from first to third on an error by the pitcher. He scored when
Trey Cochran reached base on a two-out error at short.
Following a run that evened the game at 1-1 when the Lions scored their first on a ground ball to second,
Colin Kowal singled to left to drive in
Brian Brademan from third to put UTPB back in the lead 2-1.
The team's lead didn't last for long, as UAFS came back with five runs in its half of the seventh, getting five hits in the inning and taking advantage of a pair of errors to go on top 6-2.
The Falcons got a pair of bases-loaded walks from
Ty Morgan and Grifol in the bottom of the ninth to get a couple of runs back, but left the tying run at the plate in leaving the bases loaded to end the four-run loss.
Kowal led the Falcons with a pair of base hits on the day and was one of two players (Grifol) to drive in and score a run on the afternoon.
The Falcons return home early in the coming week, hosting University of the Southwest for a pair of games Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
