Morgan, Grifol Carry Falcons to Friday Sweep of Oklahoma Christian

3/14/2014 7:18:00 PM

Andrew Grifol threw his first complete game shutout of the season and Ty Morgan drove in game-winning runs twice on the day as UTPB Baseball shutout Oklahoma Christian 2-0 before winning game two 6-5 in 10 innings Friday afternoon at Roden Field.

Grifol dominated on the mound in the opener, allowing only two hits and a walk in the seven-inning outing with six strikeouts.

Morgan came through for UTPB, breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with his first home run of the season to right field to score Grifol for the game's only runs.

Oklahoma Christian brought the tying run to the plate after leading off the seventh with its only walk of the game, but Grifol got out of trouble with a line out double play to third and a fly ball to right to wrap up the win.

Victory in game two came a little harder for the Falcons despite scoring the first runs of the game in their first trip to the plate. RBI base hits from Trey Cochran and Ryan Arrick scored David Lee and Cochran, respectively, for a 2-0 lead after one.

The Eagles score their first run of the day in the top of the third and used a three-run top of the sixth off of three hits and an error to grab a 4-2 lead.

UTPB matched OCU in its half of the inning, scoring three runs behind hits from David Fetkenher and Ryne Head to tie the game and a sac fly from Colin Kowal to reclaim a 5-4 advantage.

The Falcons were an out away from completing the sweep in the ninth with runners of the corners, but Oklahoma Christian tied the game at 5-5 on an errant pick off attempt that scored Markus Carr from third.

Brad Paramapoonya struck out the side in the top of the 10th, pitching his second inning of the game, to keep the score knotted at 5-5.

Cochran led off the bottom of the 10th with a single into left and advanced into scoring position on a deep double to center from Neil Madsen off the glove of the OCU center fielder. Following an intentional walk to Daniel Andrade to load the bases with no one out, Morgan ended the game with a fly ball deep enough to left to score Cochran and give UTPB a 6-5 win.

UTPB goes for the sweep Saturday afternoon, concluding the three game series with Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m.
