Baseball Earns Series Win with Sunday Split Against Cameron

2/9/2014 4:59:00 PM

UTPB baseball earned its first series win of 2014 Sunday afternoon, winning its third straight game over Cameron 6-2 at Roden Field before dropping the final game of the weekend 5-2 against the Aggies.

Andrew Grifol was dominant on the mound for UTPB in the Sunday opener, striking out 10 and allowing two runs off of seven hits in six innings while walking none.

Trailing 2-0 when Cameron scored both runs in the top of the third, the Falcons cut the margin in half in the bottom of the fourth with a ground ball fielders choice with the bases loaded to score Ty Morgan from third.

UTPB rallied to first tie the game as Colin Kowal scored from third on a balk, and a Trey Cochran double down the line into left drove home Grifol and Jose Sierra to go on top 4-2.

A two-out double in the bottom of the sixth from Neil Madsen to score Kowal and Ryan Popescu added a pair of insurance runs to put the Falcons ahead 6-2.

Morgan led UTPB at the plate with three hits in four at-bats while Cochran ended the game with three of the teams five RBI.

Cameron took an early lead once again in the second game of the day, scoring an unearned run in the first to go on top 1-0.

The Aggies added a second run on a double in the second and scored again in the top of the fourth to lead 3-0.

Two more runs by the visitors in the top of the seventh on a pair of run-scoring singles helped Cameron to a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

UTPB responded with its backs against the wall in its final trip to the plate as David Fetkenher singled up the middle with one out and Ryne Head reached on an infield error at short to put two on with one out.

Morgan loaded the bases and a walk by Sierra scored the first UTPB run of the game and brought the tying run to the plate.

The Falcons managed one more run on a Neil Madsen sacrifice fly to right, but stranded two more runners in the three-run loss.

Brian Woody dropped his first decision in his second appearance on the season, giving up six runs off of six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

UTPB hits the road for the only time in February this week, traveling to Alpine, Texas, for a Tuesday afternoon matinee at Sul Ross.
