Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader vs. Cameron

UTPB baseball earned a pair of come-from-behind wins Saturday, defeating Cameron 5-3 & 4-3 to improve to 3-2 in the second week of the 2014 season at Roden Field.

Trailing 3-1 in the opener, Jose Sierra needed just one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third to put the Falcons on top, hitting a 3-run home run to score Neil Madsen and Andrew Grifol to take a 4-3 lead.

Sierra gave the Falcons an insurance run in the fifth, singling with one out to drive in Grifol and give UTPB a 5-3 lead.

Jessie Arnold earned his first win of the season, settling down after allowing three runs in the first two innings to toss four straight scoreless frames. He gave up four hits and four walks in six innings while striking out five.

Brad Paramapoonya earned the save by throwing a scoreless seventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Sierra recorded two of the Falcons four hits in the game, but UTPB benefitted from drawing four walks and having three batters hit at the plate.

They were forced to play from behind again in game two when the Aggies put up a pair of runs in the top of the first. Ryan Popescu cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, singling with two runners on to score Madsen from second.

The Falcons tied the game an inning later with Ryne Head stealing home after David Lee stole second on a double steal.

Sierra scored Lee two batters later with his fourth RBI of the day  on a base hit to go on top 3-2.

Cameron came back to tie the game on an unearned run scored on a two-out single from Tobin Mateychick and even the game at 3-3.

Ty Morgan put UTPB in the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, getting a two-out pinch-hit single to drive home Daniel Andrade from third.

Paramapoonya shut the door in the seventh, striking out the first two batters before ending the day on a ground out to second for his second save of the afternoon.

Kyle Romstadt earned the win in relief, entering in the fifth to throw 1.2 scoreless innings with a hit allwoed and one strikeout.

Sierra paced UTPB at the plate, getting hits in each of his three at bats.

The Falcons and Aggies play two more Sunday afternoon, with first pitch in Odessa scheduled for 12 p.m.
