UTPB Women's Basketball held the lead seven times in the first half and was in front as late as 7:43 remaining in the game, but Lubbock Christian pulled away in the final minutes to send the Falcons to a 90-77 defeat Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.
Valerie Barriga's basket with 14:39 on the clock in the first tied the game for the third time in two minutes, and a pair of 3-pointers from Briana Dominguez put the Falcons in the lead 19-13.Â
UTPB led for much of the remainder of the half while never trailing by more than a possession until a Lady Chaps basket with 2:03 in the half to put LCU up by four, and a Falcon free throw sent the team into halftime trailing by three.
UTPB connected on three 3-point attempts in the first two and a half minutes of the second half, all to tie the game, and later went on top on a
Keyondra White basket to lead 52-51 with 14:17 to play.
The Falcons led by as many as five points in the second half when Barriga hit both free throws on two consecutive trips to the line to lead 59-54.
The Lady Chaps never went away, going back on top by a point with 7:28 remaining in the game's final lead change.
LCU scored six in a row to lead by 10 with just under three minutes to play and held the double-digit advantage the remainder of the game.
Barriga paced the Falcons with 24 points on the day, hitting all 12 of her free-throw attempts and 2-of-3 from downtown.
Giselle Loya connected on four shots from 3-point range to add 15 and
Jocelyn Cook hit 4-of-5 from the field to add 10 points.
Emily Pool led all scorers on the day with 26 points for Lubbock Christian.
