UTPB Baseball opened up a four-game weekend with a pair of 1-0 and 9-2 wins over University of the Southwest at Roden Field in Odessa.
The Falcons rode a strong pitching performance from
Hector Arellano in the opener, as the junior gave up only a pair of hits and walked one while striking our four in a six-inning outing.
UTPB took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring the lone run of the game when
Brian Brademan reached base on a lead-off single into center and later scored from third on a double-play to take a 1-0 lead.
Brad Paramapoonya earned his third save of the season after working out of trouble. Entering to start the top of the seventh, he got out of a self-inflicted bases-loaded situation with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to end the threat and wrap up the win.
Runs came easier in game two for the Falcons, scoring twice in their first trip to the plate on an error at first and a sacrifice fly to center by Brademan.
An RBI single by
Jose Sierra an inning later increased the Falcons advantage to 3-0 after two.
UTPB broke away from the Mustangs in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on just one hit. Batting with the bases loaded after a walk and a pair of batters hit by pitch,
Daniel Andrade singled into center to score a pair.
Travis Sims scored an at bat later on a fielding error at first, and Andrade came in on a delayed steal when
Neil Madsen created a rundown between first and second.Â
Holding a commanding 7-0 lead, UTPB added lone runs in the fifth and sixth innings before giving up two runs in the seventh in the seven-run win.
Ethan Blucher earned his first win of the season, giving up a single bate hit in the first inning and just one walk with five strikeouts in six innings of action.
UTPB returns Saturday afternoon, taking on Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
