Men's Basketball Comes on Strong Late in 79-74 Win at Texas A&M International

UTPB Men's Basketball earned its first lead early in the second half and went back on top for good wiht 4:11 to play in a 79-74 win on the road at Texas A&M International Saturday night in Laredo, Texas.

The Falcons tied the score once in the first half but otherwise played from behind in the first 20 minutes.

UTPB took its first lead on six straight points when Phadarius Taylor and Keith Martin hit shots on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 39-39, and a basket by Thomas Feeney put UTPB ahead 41-39 with 17:46 to play.

Four straight points for the Dustdevils put them back on top two minutes later, and the home team held the lead for the next 12 minutes.

UTPB regrouped as the game drew to a close, rebounding from trailing by five to tie the game on a layup by Dwayne Soders and 3-pointer from Feeney to even the game at 60-60 with just under seven minutes to play.

Madison Turner put UTPB in the lead three trips down the court on a layup, Thomas Feeney broke the sixth tie of the night with another shot from downtown, and after Texas A&M International converted a three-point possession at the foul line, Taylor hit a layup to put the Falcons on top for good.

A basket by Feeney and a pair of free throws from Soders with 2:43 to play put the Falcons up by five, and UTPB never led by less than three the remainder of the game as Feeney sealed the victory with a breakaway dunk with six seconds remaining.

Taylor and Feeney shared the team lead on offense, each scoring 22 points on the night on 8-13 and 7-13 shooting from the floor, respectively. Soders added 13 points on 5-8 shooting as UTPB ended the night hitting 54.7 percent of its field goals on the day, including shooting 17-27 (63 percent) in the second half.
