Early Lead Helps Falcons to 78-66 Win Over Rogers State

A 10-0 run to start Saturday afternoon's Heartland Conference contest against Rogers State helped UTPB women's basketball earn a 78-66 home victory in Odessa, Texas.

UTPB got on the board with a 3-pointer from Keyondra White, increased its lead to 5-0 on another basket by White, led 8-0 on a second shot from deep by Giselle Loya and went ahead 10-0 on a layup by Danielle Wilson at 16:23.

The large lead helped the Falcons combat a run by Rogers State that saw the Hillcats chip the UTPB advantage down to a single possession after four straight points to cut the margin down to 20-17 at 8:47.

The Falcon offense regrouped and came back to 12 straight over the next six minutes with six points by Valerie Barriga and four from Katreese Locket to go back on top by 15 points, and UTPB closed out the half on a 3-pointer by Brianna Jones to go into halftime with a 36-20 lead.

Loya hit a three coming out of the break to go up by 19 and UTPB led by a game-high 24 points two different times, first on a three by White and again on a layup by Shaquiri Graham at 11:34.

Rogers State worked the lead down to as few as seven points in the final minutes of the half, but UTPB closed out the game with the final five points of the day to close out the 12-point win.

Four different Falcons reached double figures on the day UTPB held a 54.2% to 31.7% shooting advantage on the game , led by Barriga and her 17 points. White added 13 points while Loya hit 4-of-8 from three-point range to score 12, and Graham hit all four of her field goals to add 12 points in a reserve role.

Katy Hansen led all players with 25 points for Rogers State.

UTPB remains at home this week, hosting Oklahoma Christian Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
