New Mexico Highlands Gets Revenge, Drops Women's Basketball 70-63

Box Score New Mexico Highlands got revenge for a 21 point UTPB victory last month, knocking off the Falcons 70-63 Tuesday night in Las Vegas, N.M., in the second meeting between the teams this season.

Highlands held UTPB to just 31 percent from the floor as a team on the night while finishing the game just below 40 percent itself.

The Falcons played from behind in most of the first 10 minutes of the night and took its second lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Brianna Dominguez to go ahead 19-18 at 10:05. UTPB led by as many as seven points at 31-24 on a Brianna Jones three and a pair from the line by Shaquiri Graham, but Highlands scored the final seven points of the half, inlcuding abasket before the buzzer, to cut the UTPB lead to 32-31 at halftime.

Both teams kept the game close throughout the early minutes after halftime until the Cowgirls pulled ahead by eight on four straight points to lead 51-43.

The Falcons got within three with the next five points, four coming off a pair of layups from Graham, but NMHU scored the next eight to go back on top 59-48 with 4:19 remaining.

UTPB fought back in the final minutes of the game and reduced a 63-53 deficit down to just two points on a 10-2 run as Giselle Loya scored eight points and hit a pair of threes, but New Mexico Highlands scored the last five points of the night to wrap up a seven-point win.

Graham led the Falcons with 18 points in just 16 minutes off the bench. She was 5-of-6 from the field on the night and hit 8-of-10 from the line while also grabbing seven rebounds. Loya scored 15 on the night and had a season-high nine rebounds to lead the Falcons.

Angela Sanchez had a game-high 19 points for New Mexcio Highlands in the victory.

UTPB stays on the road this weekend, traveling to Denton for a 2 p.m. contest at Texas Woman's.
