Falcons Fall in 102-99 Loss Against Eastern New Mexico

Box Score UTPB men's basketball held an 11-point, 49-38 halftime lead Saturday afternoon against visiting Eastern New Mexico, but the Greyhounds out-scored the Falcons 64-50 in the second half of a 102-99 defeat in the team's final non-conference game of the season.

The Falcons led by as many as 14 points in the first half of action, pushing a six-point advantage to a 49-35 lead as part of a 9-1 run and went into halftime with an 11-point advantage after a three for ENMU before the buzzer. Stephan Thompson and Xavier Martin each had 12 points in the first half as the Falcons shot 51 percent from the floor while holding the Greyhounds to 10-26 from the field (38 percent).

UTPB stayed in front at the beginning of the second half until Eastern New Mexico cut a seven point lead into the game's ninth tie of the day at 63-63. The Greyhounds went in front for the first time in the second half at 12:56 and were ahead by as many as seven on a 3-pointer by Demetrius Balark to lead 83-76 at 8:21.

The Falcons came back as Thomas Feeney answered with a 3-pointer and baskets by Martin and Andre Smith tied the game at 83-83. A free throw a possession later by Smith followed by a layup from Phadarius Taylor put the Falcons ahead 86-83 to cap a 10-point run.

Neither team was able to get pull ahead by more than a point as the lead changed hands seven times in the final four minutes. Chris Wyms put the Greyhounds ahead by three with a pair at the line as 19 seconds remained in regulation, but Taylor answered with a pair of free throws for UTPB with 10 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game. Michael Randle was successful on both attempts at the charity stripe for ENMU on its next possession, and the Falcons missed a 3-pointer to tie the game as time expired.

Taylor led UTPB with 20 points, hitting 6-of-8 from the field and all eight of his free throw attempts on the day. Thompson and Martin each added 18 points, Thompson with a team-best nine rebounds, and Feeney had 14 points with a pair of threes.

Wyms had a game-high 29 points for Eastern New Mexico, hitting 12-of-13 at the line, while Randle was 11-13 at the free throw line in scoring 20 points on the day.

The two teams combined for 99 free throw attempts on the afternoon. ENMU hit 42-48 (87 percent) and the Falcons went 37-51 at the line (72 percent).

UTPB is back in action this coming week, starting Heartland Conference play Thursday night at Oklahoma Christian.
