Volleyball Wraps Up Home Slate with 3-0 Shutout of University of the Southwest

Box Score UTPB volleyball concluded its 2014 home schedule Tuesday night, blanking University of the Southwest in a 25-13, 25-18, 25-21 win in three sets.

Ariana Gallardo helped set the pace for the match early in the first set with three set aces and helping the Falcons to four kills as UTPB won the first 11 points of the opening set. It led by as many as 13 points, taking a 23-10 advantage on a block by Ryley Carman and Rachel Dixon and the Falcons won the first 25-13 on a kill from Hannah Rebb.

UTPB started out strong to open up the second set, getting three kills from Puava Tulau, Carman and Rebb capped by an ace from Annelise Sanchez to get out on a 4-0 run.

Four more straight points helped the Falcons to a 12-6 lead off a pair of kills from Caitlyn Guajardo, and the Falcons never led by fewer than three points over the remainder of the set in the 25-18 win.

The third and final set was tighter, as University of the Southwest erased an early 13-8 advantage for the Falcons to a 20-20 tie late in the set. UTPB fought back to win five of the final six points of the evening, wrapping up the contest on kills from Erica Poe and Bobbi Sczruba for a 25-21 third set victory.

Guajardo and Sanchez each had seven kills to pace the UTPB attack. Marina Salazar and Ariana Gallardo each had 12 digs and Gallardo led the team with 18 assists.

The Falcons close out the 2014 season this weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a Saturday Heartland Conference contest at St. Edward's.
