Men's Basketball Storms Back for 104-82 Home Opener Against Sul Ross

Box Score UTPB men's basketball started out its 2014-15 home schedule Wednesday night with a 104-82 home win against Sul Ross.

The Falcons, tied with the Lobos 44-44 at halftime, out-scored Sul Ross 60-38 in the second half.

UTPB held the lead for most of the first half and led by as many as 12 points on a basket by Madison Turner, but Sul Ross fought back in the final minutes of the third, scoring six points in the last 44 seconds and tallying eight of the final 11 points in the half to even the score heading into the break.

The second half belonged all to the Falcons. UTPB used a 10-point run with layups from Stephan Thompson, John Bailey and Phadarius Taylor and a three by Turner to go ahead 59-50 at 14:27.

The Falcons went in control of the game by later scoring nine more points in a row, four by Bailey, to go on top 70-53.

UTPB led by as many 24 points on a late layup by Malcolm Hill-Bey in the 22-point victory.

Thompson led five Falcons in double-figures, scoring 20 points on a 9-of-11 night from the field to go with nine rebounds. Phadarius Taylor double-doubled with 17 points and 10 boards, and Hill-Bey also scored 17 points on the night. Lamar Falley added 15 points off the bench and Turner also scored 15 to go with six assists and no turnovers.

Darrell Gardner led all players on the night with 23 points for Sul Ross.

UTPB is back in action next week, traveling to Portales, N.M., for a 7 p.m. contest at Eastern New Mexico.
