Box Score UTPB women's basketball won its second straight game to open the 2014-15 season Tuesday night, knocking off Angelo State 64-56 on the road in San Angelo, Texas.
Valerie Barriga continued her big start to the season, leading the Falcons in scoring for the second straight game with a game-high 26 points while also leading all players with 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the field for the game, with UTPB shooting just 33 percent (20-60) and Angelo State making 18-of-45 (40 percent).
UTPB grabbed its first lead of the night halfway through the first half, going on top 13-12 at 11:28 of the first half after three straight free throws from Barriga. UTPB broke a 19-19 tie with eight straight points to lead 27-19 and led by eight twice in the final 4:19 to go into halftime with a 30-24 lead.
The Falcons led the entirety of the second half and were able to turn a 34-30 lead into a 43-32 advantage off of threes from Barriga and Briana Dominguez.
UTPB pulled away towards the end of the game, holding a 12 point lead on a basket by
Keyondra White from the paint with 7:09 to play and led by a game-high 14 point margin off a pair of free throws by Barriga with only two minutes left.
UTPB held a 46-34 rebounding advantage on the night with eight players ending the night with at least three rebounds and attempted nine more free throws then Angelo State.
Shauna Coleman led ASU with 13 points in a reserve role.
UTPB comes back for its 2014 home opener this weekend, hosting New Mexico Highlands Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
