Box Score UTPB men's basketball fell to 1-1 in its opening weekend of action, dropping a 101-97 contest against host Fort Lewis at the 2014 Skyhawk Classic in Ignacio, Colo.
Madison Turner led all players in the game with 26 points on a 9-of-15 performance from the field as he hit 5-of-8 attempts from 3-point range.
Malcolm Hill-Bey added 24 points off the bench, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
UTPB came back after trailing from the first possession of the night to lead 11-9 on a bucket from
Stephen Thompson, but the two-point lead proved to be the only time the Falcons held a lead on the evening. Fort Lewis scored the next seven and led by as many as 15 points in the first half as the Skyhawks were in the lead 48-37 at halftime.
The Falcons were able to cut an 18 point deficit to a two-possession game over 10 minutes to trail 94-88 with 1:27 remaining in the game.
Lamar Falley hit a three with 13 seconds remaining to pull UTPB within four, but that was as close as the Falcons could get in the final minute in the four-point loss.
Alex Herrera ended the night with a double-double for Fort Lewis, leading the Skyhawks with 25 points and 11 rebounds. He blocked three shots and connected on 17-of-24 shots from the line. He was one of five players for Fort Lewis to end the night in double-figures.
UTPB is back in action next weekend, facing Southwestern Adventist and Huston-Tillotson in Laredo.
