Men's Basketball Runs Away with 44-Point Win Over Western New Mexico

Box Score UTPB men's basketball opened up its 2014-15 season Friday night with a dominating 101-57 win against Western New Mexico in the opening game of the 2014 Skyhawk Classic hosted by Fort Lewis in Ignacio, Colo.

Senior Phadarius Taylor led a group of five Falcons in double-figures with a game-high 18 points on the night, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor and shooting 8-of-9 from the line to go with eight rebounds and six assists, both team-bests. Madison Turner went 7-of-10 from the field with a pair from behind the arc to add 16 points and John Bailey poured in 15 points, hitting 4-of-5 shot attempts and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Lamar Falley added 13 points in 28 minutes off the bench and Stephen Thompson contributed 11 points in a reserve roll as UTPB shot 61 percent as a team from the field on the night while holding Western New Mexico to just 28.3 shooting.

UTPB never trailed in the game, scoring the first six on the night on layups from Taylor, Bailey and Turner. The Falcons hit their first double-digit lead at 9:58 of the first half when Turner hit a 3-pointer and finished a steal with a fast-break layup to go on top 29-19.

UTPB finished the half with seven straight points, including a pair of threes by Falley to go into the break with a 49-29 lead.

The Falcons never led by fewer than 20 in the second half and scored nine straight to go ahead 70-38 with 14:05 remaining. 

UTPB later put together a 14-point run midway through the second to see it take an 87-45 advantage with 7:20 left on the clock and ended the game with a game-high 44-point lead.

The Falcons are back in action Saturday night in Colorado in the second game of the evening, taking on host Fort Lewis at 8 p.m.
