Box Score UTPB volleyball was unable to pull off a comeback after dropping the first two sets Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (15-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-25) in non-conference action on the road at #25 NAIA Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas.
Trailing 2-0 to the Pioneers, the Falcons came out in the third set and scored four straight points and five out of six, two on kills by
Ryley Carman, to turn a 4-2 WBU lead into a 7-5 advantage.
The Falcons had to fight back from behind again after Wayland Baptist scored the next four points in the set to lead 9-7. UTPB scored four of the next five, three off of attacks by Carman to go back ahead 11-10.
After taking the lead and tying three times, the Falcons climbed ahead 18-14 on a four point run featuring kills by
Hannah Rebb, Carman and
Puava Tulau. They held on to the lead the remainder of the set, claiming the third with the last three points and winning 25-20 on a block by Tulau and
Annelise Sanchez.
Wayland Baptist came out and controlled the fouth, winning the first four points and taking a 10-4 lead early on. The Falcons scored five of the next six points to get within two, but fell behind by eight on six straight by Wayland Baptist before it closed out the match with a 10-point win in the fourth.
Shahala Hawkins led all players on the night with 21 total kills. Carman had a team-high 16 winners to go with hitting a team-best .275 on the night, getting seven kills in the team's third-set victory.
Taylor Harmon (14) and
Jordan McDonald (13) led the team in digs and
Ariana Gallardo ended the night with 30 assists.
The Falcons return to Heartland Conference action later this week, hosting St. Mary's Thursday evening at 7 p.m. and Texas A&M International Saturday at noon.
